Is there a way to be able to execute sendmail within either PL-SQL or SQL. The platform I want to do this on is UNIX

Although I havn't tried this myself, here's something from Oracle that should cover what you're asking: (for Oracle 8i, Java can be wrappered as PL/SQL)

BUILD ENTERPRISE JAVABEANS
New sample code and tutorials show you how to build an order entry
system using EJB's, how to write EJB's that send email using the
javamail api, and how to code EJB transactions that span multiple
database schemas.

Look at Oracle8 external procedures (as an alternative to the Java solution)
This allows one to call a 'C' shared library.

Check out Oracle Magazine January/February 1999.
It has an article showing how to run an OS command using the above.
It works really well!
