I'd like to load the Julian date into a variable that will be written to output files. If it can be done, please recommend the best way to do it? Thanks.

Scott,
Here's a starting point:

select to_char(SYSDATE, 'J') from dual;

produces:

TO_CHAR
-------
2451448

so you should be able to select it INTO a
varchar2(7) variable then use the variable
as you wish. Hope this helps.
