This is a great solution, however, when I use DECODE() in the ORDER BY clause (your deluxe example), Oracle proceeds to ignore the indexes. I know that 8.1 allows indexes on functions of columns, but is there an alternative way to do this in 8.0 ? Performance, of course, is crucial and triggers/additional columns is not a good solution.
