Can anyone please tell me the importance of the column serial# in v$session view. I know that it is used for killing the session, but is there any other importance of that field? Thanks in advance

Yes...it's for killing one session. It uniquely identifies one session. Some times session can be end and start with same sid, In this case the serial# will be an integer (usually 1/2/3/4) more than the previous one. You won't get the same sid and serial# again in an opened database until you shutdown it. There is some more about it connecting PMON, which I am not pretty sure.
Hope it helps
